Stone wool (Rockwool) insulation: every product, density, price and how to choose

In short

Stone wool (rock wool, often just called Rockwool) is fibre insulation spun from molten basalt. It is non-combustible and is used for sound insulation in drywall, heat insulation under roofs, hot pipes and equipment in factories, and as a component of fire-protection systems. We supply ROCKWOOL and MicroRock stone wool in every form: slabs, rolls, wired mats and pipe sections, delivered nationwide. Ask for price and stock on LINE.

Choose stone wool by the job

Each stone-wool product is designed for a different job. Start from the job, then pick the density and thickness.

The density ranges come from the sizes published in each maker's documents. Full values are on the product pages.

How to choose the density

Density (kg/m³) says how tightly the slab is packed. It is not a measure of "better" on its own.

  • 40–60 kg/m³: light and economical, for drywall cavities and above ceilings for acoustics, and under roofs for heat
  • 80–100 kg/m³: holds its shape better, for walls that need a higher sound-insulation rating or where the slab stands on its own
  • 120–160 kg/m³: industrial work, tanks, furnace walls and anything under load or at high temperature

A wall's sound-insulation rating (STC / Rw) belongs to the complete wall system, not to the slab alone. Thermal conductivity (λ) per product is on the product page. See what STC and Rw mean.

Thicknesses available

Most products come in 25, 50, 75 and 100 mm. The standard slab is 60 × 120 cm; some products also come in 40 × 120 cm. Rolls and wired mats have their own lengths. Pack contents and area per pack are shown on each product page once you pick a size.

Stone wool prices

Price depends on product, density, thickness and quantity. Safe 'n' Silent Pro already shows web prices per pack (VAT included) on its product page as soon as you pick a grade and size. For the other products ask on LINE with the product, thickness and number of packs. For larger quantities or projects, tell our admin for a further discount.

Stone wool or glass wool?

Both are mineral-wool fibre insulation. Stone wool withstands higher temperatures and comes in more high-density grades, so it is the main choice for industrial work, fire protection and acoustic walls that need a rigid slab. Glass wool is lighter and cheaper per square metre and is common for ordinary roofs and ceilings. Read the full comparison in stone wool vs glass wool.

Frequently asked questions

Is stone wool the same as Rockwool?

Yes in everyday use. "Stone wool" (rock wool) is the material; ROCKWOOL is the largest manufacturer, and in Thailand the brand name is often used for the material. This site carries both ROCKWOOL and MicroRock stone wool.

Is stone wool dangerous, like asbestos?

No. Stone-wool insulation is not asbestos. IARC places insulation stone wool in Group 3, "not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans". The fibres can irritate skin and airways temporarily during installation, so wear gloves, goggles and a mask. See is stone wool safe?

What density do I need for sound insulation?

For ordinary drywall, 40–60 kg/m³ at 50 mm is the usual choice and our best-selling size. For a higher rating, move to 80–100 kg/m³ or a thicker slab. The result depends on the wall framing, the boards and how well gaps are sealed. Send us your wall drawing on LINE for advice.

How much heat can stone wool take?

It depends on the product. Building grades are for ordinary ambient temperatures; industrial grades such as ProRox have a maximum service temperature per grade in the maker's documents, shown on the product page. The material itself is non-combustible with a melting point of around 1,000 °C or higher. See choosing high-temperature insulation

Is stone wool ruined if it gets wet?

The fibres do not absorb water, but a soaked slab insulates poorly until it dries. Store it dry, install it in cavities without leaks, and use faced products where the insulation is exposed to moisture.

How do I order, and is there a minimum?

Pick the product and size on its page and press the LINE button. The site prepares a message with the product, size and price (where shown); add the number of packs and your province and send it. We deliver throughout Thailand at actual shipping cost; our admin confirms the total and delivery time before you commit.
