In short
Before buying insulation, answer seven things: what it must do and where it goes, site temperature and humidity, dimensions and area, the project's fire and safety requirements, documents needed, installation method and accessories, and delivery and pack sizes. These details let you choose the right product, thickness and quantity, and avoid ordering the wrong item or too little.
Location: roof, ceiling, wall, floor, pipe, duct or equipment
New building or renovation — renovations often have limits on space and access
Indoors or outdoors; exposed to sun, rain or knocks?
2. Temperature and humidity
Pipes and equipment: the temperature of the fluid or surface, both normal and maximum; it must be within the manufacturer's service temperature range
Cold surfaces: the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air are used to assess the risk of condensation. The thickness needed depends on these conditions; no single thickness suits every job
Damp or wet areas: is a jacket or vapour barrier needed?
3. Dimensions and area
Roofs, ceilings, walls: area (m²), framing spacing and the depth of the cavity or space available for insulation
Pipes: pipe size (nominal size or outside diameter), length, number of bends, valves and fittings
Ducts: cross-section and length; external wrap or internal liner?
Roll and board sizes differ by product; send us the area and drawings and we can help calculate quantities
4. Project fire and safety requirements
Do the drawings or specifications set fire requirements, and who set them?
Keep a material's reaction to fire (e.g. its classification to EN 13501-1 or ASTM E84) separate from the fire resistance of a system, which is the result of a complete, tested installation. See Fire performance terms
Fire-protection systems, high-temperature work and electrical work should be specified and checked by the designer or qualified professionals
5. Documents needed
Datasheet — technical values with their test conditions and standards
Test reports or certificates — if the project requires them, such as fire tests, tested sound-insulating wall systems or product standards
The manufacturer's installation guide
Safety data sheet (SDS) if the site supervisor asks for it
Check that the product, thickness and facing in the documents match what you will order
Document values have conditions
A λ value is measured at a stated temperature, an R-value belongs to a stated thickness, and an STC / Rw belongs to the wall system that was tested. Always read the conditions, and never apply a system value to a single material.
6. Installation method and accessories
Who will install it, and can they follow the manufacturer's method?
